Tracking Website Performance with Google Analytics

Nordlyte Web Studio · Analytics Guide · 6 min read

you can't improve what you don't measure

Google Analytics is a free tool that shows you who's visiting your website, where they come from, and what they do once they arrive. It sounds technical, but understanding the basics doesn't require being a data expert — here's what to set up and what to actually pay attention to.

Getting set up

Create a free account at analytics.google.com, set up a property for your website, and you'll receive a small tracking snippet to add to your site. Most developers install this during the build — if yours didn't, it only takes a few minutes to add.

The numbers that actually matter

MetricWhat it tells you
Users / sessionsHow many people are visiting, and how often
Traffic sourceWhere visitors come from — Google search, social media, direct, referrals
Top pagesWhich pages get the most visits
Bounce rateHow many visitors leave after viewing just one page
ConversionsHow many visitors complete a goal — a form, a WhatsApp click, a purchase

Metrics to stop obsessing over

Raw visitor counts alone are the least useful number to fixate on. A site with fewer, more relevant visitors who actually convert is doing better than one with high traffic and no results. Focus on conversions and traffic quality over raw volume.

🎯 the one number worth checking weekly: how many visitors completed your main goal — a form, a WhatsApp message, a purchase

How to actually use this data

1. Find your best-performing traffic source

If most conversions come from Google search, that's a signal to invest more in SEO. If social media drives more, prioritize your Instagram or Facebook links instead.

2. Spot high-bounce pages

A page with a high bounce rate and low time-on-page usually means the content didn't match what the visitor expected, or the page loads too slowly — see our note on common website mistakes.

3. Track goal completions, not just visits

Set up a simple "goal" for your main call-to-action — form submission, WhatsApp click, or purchase — so you can see conversion rate, not just raw traffic.

Should I check this daily?

No — daily numbers fluctuate too much to be meaningful. Weekly or monthly reviews give a much clearer picture of real trends without you reacting to normal day-to-day noise.
